Summary

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) effectively treated depression in most patients, with over half achieving significant symptom reduction. However, baseline sleep patterns did not predict treatment success in this study.

  • Understanding predictors of ECT response, including sleep physiology, is crucial for optimizing patient care.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between pre-treatment polysomnography findings and clinical outcomes in patients undergoing ECT.
  • To identify polysomnographic variables, such as sleep-onset rapid eye movement (SOREM) periods, that predict ECT efficacy.

Main Methods:

  • Forty-one patients undergoing ECT were assessed using clinical evaluations (Research Diagnostic Criteria, Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression) and polysomnography.
  • Patients were evaluated after a minimum of 10 drug-free days prior to ECT.

    • Baseline SOREM and other polysomnographic measures showed limited utility in predicting ECT response.
    • Age-related sleep disruption may influence polysomnographic findings in this patient population.
