Area of Science:

  • Rheumatology
  • Clinical Immunology

Background:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) onset age is debated regarding its classification as a distinct clinical subset.
  • Potential differences in therapy and prognosis based on age at RA onset require further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare early onset rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients with late onset RA patients.
  • To determine if age at RA onset influences demographic, clinical, laboratory, or radiographic characteristics.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study design.
  • Comparison of 23 early onset RA patients (average age 52.8 years) with 36 late onset RA patients (average age 70.3 years).

Main Results:

  • No statistically significant differences were observed between the early and late onset RA groups.
  • Demographic, clinical, laboratory, and radiographic characteristics were comparable between the two groups.

Conclusions:

  • Late onset rheumatoid arthritis (RA) may not represent a distinct clinical subset.
  • Age at onset does not appear to significantly impact key patient characteristics in rheumatoid arthritis.
