    Summary

    This study presents a method for dissociating muscle fibers to reveal metabolic disease markers. Various staining techniques can then identify abnormal accumulations of lipids, carbohydrates, proteins, and minerals.

    Background:

    • Metabolic diseases often manifest with abnormal intracellular accumulations in muscle fibers.
    • Diagnosing these conditions requires sensitive methods for detecting these deposits.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To describe a technique for dissociating formalin-fixed muscle fibers.
    • To outline various staining methods for identifying specific accumulated substances in muscle.

    • Brief dissociation (3-5 seconds) of formalin-fixed muscle using a Willems Polytron.
