    Amniotic fluid has thromboplastic activity that increases during pregnancy. This activity is lower in postmature pregnancies compared to normal or preterm cases.

    Background:

    • Amniotic fluid (AF) contains various bioactive substances.
    • Thromboplastic activity of amniotic fluid (TAAF) is a potential indicator of pregnancy status.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To quantify TAAF in normal and pathologic pregnancies.
    • To investigate the correlation between TAAF and gestational progression.
    • To compare TAAF levels in different pregnancy complications and postmaturity.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized a modified Quick's one-stage method for prothrombin time.
    • Assessed TAAF in 97 pregnancies (normal and pathologic).
    • Analyzed TAAF values in relation to gestational age and specific pregnancy conditions.

    Main Results:

    • AF demonstrates significant thromboplastic activity.
    • TAAF shows a strong negative correlation (r = -0.86) with pregnancy progression.
    • TAAF levels in pregnancies with diabetes, toxemia, IUGR, and Rh incompatibility were comparable to normal pregnancies.
    • Significantly lower TAAF (<45 seconds) was observed in 70% of postmature pregnancies, unlike preterm or term pregnancies.

    Conclusions:

    • TAAF increases with advancing gestation.
    • TAAF is not significantly altered in common pathologic pregnancies.
    • Reduced TAAF may be indicative of postmaturity, warranting further investigation.
