Background:

Family practice residencies lack standardized procedural curricula.
The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Task Force on Procedures aimed to establish guidelines.
Recommendations are based on current residency teaching and physician practice.

Purpose of the Study:

To identify procedures commonly taught in family practice residencies.
To determine procedures frequently performed by practicing family physicians.
To inform the development of standardized residency procedural training.

Main Methods:

Surveys were distributed to all family practice residency programs and departments.
A representative sample of practicing family physicians was surveyed regarding procedures performed.
Response rates were 74.1% for residency programs and 46.1% for practicing physicians.

Main Results:

69 procedures were identified as being taught in most family practice residencies.
30 procedures were identified as being performed by most practicing family physicians.
A significant discrepancy exists between taught and performed procedures.

Conclusions:

Numerous procedures are taught in residencies or performed by physicians.
Fewer procedures are performed by practicing physicians compared to those taught in residencies.
The findings suggest a need to align residency curricula with current practice needs.
