Summary

Soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1) is elevated in polymyositis (PM) and dermatomyositis (DM) patients, indicating its role in these inflammatory myopathies. However, sICAM-1 levels did not correlate with disease severity or duration.

Area of Science:

  • Immunology
  • Rheumatology
  • Neurology

Background:

  • Polymyositis (PM) and dermatomyositis (DM) are idiopathic inflammatory myopathies.
  • Soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1) is a marker of endothelial activation and inflammation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate serum sICAM-1 levels in patients with PM and DM.
  • To investigate the correlation between sICAM-1 levels and clinical findings in these patients.

Main Methods:

  • Serum sICAM-1 levels were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).
  • Patients included 19 untreated individuals with inflammatory myopathy (14 PM, 5 DM), 20 with other neuromuscular disorders, and 14 healthy controls.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Serum sICAM-1 levels were significantly higher in PM/DM patients compared to controls and patients with other neuromuscular disorders.
  • No correlation was found between sICAM-1 levels and clinical characteristics such as disease severity, illness duration, or serum creatine kinase (CK) levels.
  • Conclusions:

    • Elevated serum sICAM-1 suggests its involvement in the inflammatory processes of PM and DM.
    • sICAM-1 may serve as a potential biomarker for inflammatory myopathies.
