Background:

  • Major depression is a prevalent mood disorder.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the efficacy of dexamethasone in treatment-resistant major depression.
  • To explore the relationship between baseline cortisol levels and treatment response.

Main Methods:

  • Ten patients with treatment-resistant major depression were enrolled.
  • Patients received a 4-day course of dexamethasone (3 mg daily) alongside existing antidepressants.
  • Serum cortisol levels and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD) scores were measured at baseline, day 5, and day 21.
