Summary

Normal serum levels for Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) were established using enzyme immunoassay (EIA). NGF levels were found to be significantly lower in females compared to males, with no age-related variations observed.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Biochemistry
  • Endocrinology

Background:

  • Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) is a crucial neurotrophic factor with incompletely understood levels in bodily fluids.
  • Understanding normal NGF concentrations is vital for interpreting potential disease-related alterations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the normal range of NGF concentrations in human serum.
  • To investigate potential variations in serum NGF levels based on age and sex.

Main Methods:

  • Serum samples were collected from 157 healthy individuals.
  • Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) levels were quantified using a sensitive enzyme immunoassay (EIA) technique.

Main Results:

  • The mean serum NGF level in the normal population was determined to be 194 +/- 25 pg ml-1.

Related Experiment Videos

  • No statistically significant differences in NGF levels were observed with respect to age.
  • Serum NGF levels were significantly lower in females (112 +/- 31 pg ml-1) compared to males (243 +/- 35 pg ml-1).
  • Conclusions:

    • This study provides reference values for serum NGF in a healthy adult population.
    • Sex is a significant determinant of normal serum NGF levels, with males exhibiting higher concentrations.
    • Further research is warranted to explore the physiological and clinical implications of these sex-based differences in NGF levels.
