Background:

  • Benzalkonium chloride is a cationic disinfectant with uncertain efficacy in organic environments.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the disinfecting capabilities of benzalkonium chloride as an irrigation solution.
  • To determine if high volumes of benzalkonium chloride can maintain germicidal properties in organic tissue.

Main Methods:

  • Bovine muscle strips were contaminated with bacteria.
  • Muscle strips were irrigated with varying volumes (100 mL, 1 L, 10 L) of benzalkonium chloride (1:2000) or normal saline.
  • Bacterial load was quantified after sonication to assess disinfection efficacy.
