Background:

  • Cranial sutures are critical for brain growth and development in neonates and infants.
  • Accurate sonographic assessment of these sutures is essential for diagnosing conditions like synostosis and diastasis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To establish normative sonographic measurements for major cranial sutures (sagittal, coronal, lambdoid) in neonates and infants.
  • To describe the typical sonographic appearance of these sutures.

Main Methods:

  • High-resolution sonography was performed on 50 neonates and infants (0-5 months corrected age) with normal cranial development.
  • Sonograms were correlated with histologic sections from autopsy specimens.
  • Measurements of suture width and thickness were analyzed for interobserver variability and correlation with age.

  • Sonography revealed sutures as hypoechoic gaps between hyperechoic bony plates.
