Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Surgical Pathology
  • Vascular Tumors

Background:

  • Hepatic hemangiomas are common, but gallbladder hemangiomas are exceedingly rare.
  • Gallbladder hemangiomas can present with abdominal pain and significant organ enlargement.
  • Radiographic appearances can be misleading, mimicking other cystic masses.

Observation:

  • A 50-year-old woman presented with acute right upper abdominal quadrant pain.
  • Imaging revealed a large gallbladder lesion mimicking a cystic mesenteric tumor.
  • The lesion was confirmed as a diffuse expansive cavernous hemangioma via immunohistochemistry.

Findings:

  • This case represents the fourth reported instance of a cavernous hemangioma involving the gallbladder in English literature.
  • The average age of affected individuals is 52.5 years, with a 3:1 female predominance.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Gallbladder hemangiomas can be symptomatic and present with ambiguous radiographic findings, distinct from gallstones.
  • Implications:

    • This case highlights the importance of considering rare vascular tumors in the differential diagnosis of gallbladder lesions.
    • Accurate diagnosis is crucial for appropriate management and to avoid misclassification as other cystic neoplasms.
    • Further case reports are needed to better understand the clinical behavior and optimal treatment strategies for gallbladder hemangiomas.
