Area of Science:

  • Environmental Health
  • Broadcast Media Studies

Background:

  • Allergists provide pollen counts to media outlets for public health and practice promotion.
  • The utilization of pollen count data in television news programming has not been extensively documented.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence of pollen count reporting in television news broadcasts across major US markets.

Main Methods:

  • A survey was conducted via telephone calls to news directors or meteorologists at 121 television stations.
  • Stations were located in the 30 largest Designated Market Areas (DMAs) in the United States.
  • Inquiries focused on the inclusion of pollen counts in news programming during the 1995 pollen season.

Main Results:

  • Pollen counts were featured in news programming by at least one station in 28 of the 30 largest DMAs.
  • All five stations in the Washington, DC DMA aired pollen counts.
  • No stations in Pittsburgh or Milwaukee DMAs reported carrying pollen information.
  • An estimated 49 million television households had access to broadcast pollen count data.

Conclusions:

  • Pollen count information is widely disseminated through television news, reaching a significant audience.
  • Given the apparent importance to both stations and the public, measures are proposed to ensure data reliability and meaningfulness.
