    Summary

    Serum haptoglobin phenotypes showed no significant differences in duodenal ulcer patients compared to healthy individuals. This genetic study explored haptoglobin (Hp) variations in relation to duodenal ulcer disease in a Greek population.

    Background:

    • Duodenal ulcers are a common gastrointestinal condition.
    • Haptoglobin (Hp) is a protein with known genetic variations (phenotypes).
    • The association between Hp phenotypes and duodenal ulcer disease requires further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate serum haptoglobin phenotypes in Greek patients with duodenal ulcers.
    • To compare Hp phenotypes and gene frequencies between duodenal ulcer patients and healthy controls.

    Main Methods:

    • Serum samples were collected from 100 Greek patients diagnosed with duodenal ulcer.
    • Vertical starch gel electrophoresis was used to determine haptoglobin phenotypes.
    • A control group of 2026 healthy Greek subjects was included for comparison.

    • No statistically significant differences were observed in the distribution of haptoglobin phenotypes between the duodenal ulcer patient group and the healthy control group.
    • Haptoglobin gene frequencies were also found to be similar between the two groups.

    Conclusions:

    • Serum haptoglobin phenotypes and their corresponding gene frequencies do not appear to be associated with duodenal ulcer disease in the Greek population studied.
    • Further research may be needed to explore other potential genetic or environmental factors influencing duodenal ulcer development.
