    Background:

    • Prior research indicated a link between B lymphocyte determinants and chronic membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis.
    • Other studies suggested an association between IgA nephropathy (anaphylactoid purpura nephritis) and HLA-BW35.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the association between specific human leukocyte antigen (HLA) markers (BW35, DW1) and B lymphocyte determinants with IgA nephropathy and recurrent macroscopic hematuria in Minnesota Caucasians.

    Main Methods:

    • The study compared the frequency of HLA-BW35, DW1, and B cell antigens (identified by alloantisera L, B, F) in 50 healthy controls and 18 patients with IgA nephropathy.
    • Statistical analysis was used to determine relative risks.

    • The findings suggest that B cell antigens identified by alloantisera L and B are associated with IgA nephropathy and may not be directly linked to the HLA-D region.
    • Defining B cell alloantisera in disease-specific panels could provide valuable insights into disease pathogenesis.
