Background:

Observation:

  • A 10-year-old boy presented with visual disturbances and macular degeneration in one eye, followed by chorioretinitis in the other.
  • Neurological symptoms rapidly progressed, leading to a diagnosis of SSPE confirmed by RT-PCR for measles virus RNA in cerebrospinal fluid.

Findings:

  • Brain MRI revealed high-intensity lesions in the occipital and temporal lobes, particularly around the optic radiation.
  • Intrathecal interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) therapy led to the disappearance of these lesions within two months.
