Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Digestive Diseases
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Background:

  • Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting any part of the digestive tract.
  • Esophageal involvement is an uncommon manifestation of Crohn's disease.

Observation:

  • Presents two cases of young women with Crohn's disease and prior intestinal involvement.
  • Both patients exhibited symptoms suggestive of esophagitis.

Findings:

  • Esophageal Crohn's disease requires a high index of suspicion in patients with a known diagnosis.
  • Diagnosis is established through endoscopy and multiple biopsies of both affected and normal-appearing esophageal areas.

Implications:

  • Highlights the importance of considering esophageal Crohn's disease in the differential diagnosis of esophagitis.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Emphasizes the diagnostic utility of endoscopic evaluation and targeted biopsies in suspected cases.
