Summary

Gastric tonometry is not accurate for diagnosing chronic splanchnic syndrome. This study found no correlation between intramucosal gastric pH and the condition, suggesting it is not a useful diagnostic tool.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Vascular Surgery
  • Diagnostic Imaging

Background:

  • Chronic splanchnic syndrome is a condition affecting blood flow to abdominal organs.
  • Accurate diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment and patient outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of gastric tonometry for chronic splanchnic syndrome.
  • To determine if intramucosal gastric pH measurements correlate with angiographic and clinical findings.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study involving 10 patients with suspected chronic splanchnic syndrome.
  • Intramucosal gastric pH was measured using tonometry.
  • Multiplane angiography assessed the abdominal aorta and splanchnic arteries.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Patients diagnosed with chronic splanchnic syndrome (n=5) showed extensive three-vessel disease with significant stenoses.
  • Patients without the syndrome (n=5) had no clinically significant stenoses in major splanchnic arteries, though some had inferior mesenteric artery occlusions.
  • Mean basal gastric pH did not differentiate between the groups.

Conclusions:

  • Gastric tonometry is not a reliable method for diagnosing chronic splanchnic syndrome.
  • Angiographic findings remain the primary diagnostic indicator for this condition.
