Area of Science:

  • Pulmonary Medicine
  • Respiratory Care

Context:

  • Home oxygen therapy (HOT) is a vital treatment for chronic respiratory failure.
  • Understanding patient demographics, disease profiles, and treatment outcomes is crucial for optimizing HOT.
  • This study examines a cohort of patients receiving HOT between 1984 and 1995.

Purpose:

  • To describe the underlying diseases, laboratory findings, and outcomes of patients with chronic respiratory failure undergoing HOT.
  • To compare outcomes between patients aged 70 years and older versus those younger than 70.
  • To evaluate the perceived benefits of HOT on quality of life.

Summary:

  • 155 patients with chronic respiratory failure (mean age 68.6) received HOT.
  • Common underlying diseases included COPD, lung cancer, tuberculosis, and pulmonary fibrosis.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Outcomes and baseline pulmonary function did not significantly differ between older (≥70 years) and younger (<70 years) patient groups.
  • Impact:

    • Home oxygen therapy demonstrated significant benefits in improving the quality of life for patients with chronic respiratory failure.
    • Findings suggest HOT is a valuable intervention across different age groups and underlying respiratory conditions.
    • This research provides insights into the long-term management and efficacy of HOT in a real-world clinical setting.
