Summary

Picture sort methods offer efficient dietary assessment for older adults. These methods, including one-step and two-step approaches, provide valuable food pattern data and show validity comparable to traditional food-frequency questionnaires.

Area of Science:

  • Nutritional epidemiology
  • Dietary assessment methods
  • Gerontology

Background:

  • Traditional food-frequency questionnaires (FFQs) are common for dietary assessment.
  • Alternative methods like card sorting can also assess food intake.
  • Older adults (≥65 years) require validated dietary assessment tools.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the utility of a picture-sort method for assessing food intake in older adults.
  • To compare the performance of one-step (qualitative) and two-step (semiquantitative) picture-sort versions.
  • To determine the relative validity of the picture-sort method against conventional FFQs.

Main Methods:

  • A five-category picture sort was administered to 4643 participants in the Cardiovascular Health Study (CHS).

Related Experiment Videos

  • The one-step version provided qualitative food-frequency scores.
  • A substudy with 96 participants assessed the two-step version, documenting specific frequencies and portion sizes.
  • Main Results:

    • The one-step picture sort showed significant associations with sex, age, race/ethnicity, BMI, and special diet use.
    • The two-step version demonstrated relative validity comparable to traditional FFQs.
    • The picture-sort method appears effective for assessing dietary patterns in older populations.

    Conclusions:

    • The one-step picture sort is broadly applicable for general food pattern data, especially when time and cost are constraints.
    • The two-step picture sort offers methodologic advantages, potentially simplifying cognitive tasks and allowing response modification.
    • Picture-sort procedures warrant further investigation as valuable dietary assessment tools.
