Understanding living with dying

Illness and its accompanying vulnerability create a situation in which there is tremendous potential for the patient to need understanding. The need is particularly relevant in situations in which patients and their families are faced with experiences of incurable illness and tragic loss. The failure to have this need addressed could significantly affect the patient's outcome. Thus, nurses' increased awareness of the meaning of understanding could improve the quality of care that nurses provide.
