Summary

Single doses of testosterone did not produce mood-altering effects or signs of abuse in male volunteers. This study found no significant subjective or physiological changes, unlike morphine, suggesting testosterone is not associated with abuse potential in single administrations.

Background:

  • Anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) are utilized by athletes for performance and physique enhancement.
  • Anecdotal evidence suggests AAS possess mood-elevating properties and can lead to addiction with chronic use.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the subjective and physiological effects of single doses of testosterone.
  • To compare the effects of testosterone with morphine and placebo in a controlled setting.

  • A double-blind, balanced Latin square design was employed.
  • Ten adult male volunteers received intramuscular testosterone (50, 100, 200 mg), morphine (10 mg), or placebo over five days.
