Purpose of the Study:

  • A case-control study involving 704 cardiac surgery patients.
  • Analysis of a randomized sample of 255 patients to identify risk factors.
  • Statistical comparison between patients with and without ARF, and between survivors and non-survivors.

  • ARF incidence was 3.8%; mortality was significantly higher in ARF patients (55.6%) versus non-ARF patients (5.4%).

Conclusions:

  • ARF is an infrequent but highly lethal complication following cardiac surgery.
  • Low cardiac output, prolonged perfusion, and sepsis are key risk factors for ARF.
  • Severity of ARF and postoperative sepsis significantly predict mortality.
