Summary

While some vitamins show promise in cancer prevention, current evidence is insufficient for supplementation recommendations. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables remains key for reducing cancer risk.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Nutritional Science
  • Biochemistry

Background:

  • High intake of certain vitamins has been investigated for cancer prevention.
  • Vitamins play roles in cellular processes, immune function, and metabolism relevant to carcinogenesis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To provide a concise update on the role of promising vitamins in cancer prevention.
  • To evaluate the current evidence for vitamin supplementation in cancer risk reduction.

Main Methods:

  • Review of scientific literature on vitamins and cancer prevention.
  • Analysis of epidemiological data and human intervention trials.

Main Results:

  • Vitamin A, C, E, beta-carotene, folic acid, and Vitamin D show potential mechanisms in cancer prevention.
  • Epidemiological data for antioxidant vitamins are promising but inconclusive.
  • Early human intervention trials with antioxidant vitamins have yielded disappointing results.
  • Current data are insufficient to recommend vitamin supplementation for cancer prevention.

Conclusions:

  • A diet rich in fruits and vegetables is associated with reduced cancer risk.
  • Further research on folic acid and Vitamin D in cancer development is warranted.
  • Current evidence does not support vitamin supplementation for cancer prevention.
