    Area of Science:

    • Psychiatry
    • Psychology
    • Trauma Studies

    Background:

    • Manic-depressive illness, depressed type, is a common diagnosis.
    • Some depressive episodes may be misattributed to bipolar disorder.
    • Understanding the etiology of depressive disorders is crucial for effective treatment.

    Observation:

    • Three cases of cyclic depressive disorder were analyzed.
    • Two cases were initially misdiagnosed as manic-depressive illness, depressed type.
    • The importance of detailed patient history and temporal sequencing was noted.

    Findings:

    • Anniversary reactions, linked to past trauma, can mimic depressive illness.
    • Accurate diagnosis requires thorough patient interviewing and attention to the timing of symptoms.
    • Cyclic depressive disorder may be a manifestation of anniversary reactions.

    Implications:

    • Revising diagnostic criteria for certain depressive disorders may be necessary.
    • Clinicians should consider anniversary reactions in differential diagnoses.
    • Improved diagnostic accuracy can lead to more targeted and effective therapeutic interventions for trauma survivors.
