Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Thoracic Surgery
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Thymomas are typically mediastinal tumors.
  • Pleural-based thymomas are rare, with few documented cases excluding a mediastinal origin.

Observation:

  • A 32-year-old woman presented with diffuse pleural thickening and left lung encasement.
  • Initial imaging and biopsy suggested diffuse pleural mesothelioma.
  • Surgical resection revealed an epithelial thymoma without mediastinal involvement.

Findings:

  • Pathologic examination confirmed a primary pleural thymoma.
  • This represents one of the few reported cases of thymoma without mediastinal association.

Implications:

  • Thymoma should be included in the differential diagnosis for pleural-based lesions.
  • This finding expands the understanding of thymoma presentation and location.
  • Highlights the importance of thorough pathologic examination for accurate diagnosis.
