Summary

Posterior subcapsular cataract is the strongest predictor of cataract surgery. Mild vision changes and factors like smoking and hypertension also increase the likelihood of needing cataract surgery.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Epidemiology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Cataract surgery is a common procedure to restore vision.
  • Understanding the incidence and risk factors for cataract surgery is crucial for public health planning.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the incidence of cataract surgery in participants of the Beaver Dam Eye Study.
  • To identify factors associated with undergoing cataract surgery.

Main Methods:

  • Population-based cohort study including adults aged 43-84 in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin.
  • Objective evidence of cataract extraction obtained at follow-up examinations.
  • Multivariate analyses to identify associated characteristics.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Age-adjusted incidence of cataract surgery is higher in women, those with lower diastolic blood pressure, hypertension, and impaired vision.
  • Significant associations with cataract surgery include age, smoking, nuclear, cortical, and posterior subcapsular cataracts, impaired vision, intraocular pressure, visual sensitivity, myopic refractive error, yellow color perception, and recent ophthalmologist examination.
  • Posterior subcapsular cataract showed the highest odds ratio (OR 15.51).

Conclusions:

  • Multiple factors are associated with cataract surgery incidence.
  • Posterior subcapsular cataract is the most significant lens opacity predicting surgery.
  • Mild visual function changes are also linked to subsequent cataract surgery.
