Esophageal papillomatosis: case report

    A young boy with a history of neuroblastoma developed multiple esophageal papillomas and hypopharyngeal papillomas causing laryngeal obstruction. This case highlights an unusual presentation of these benign tumors in a pediatric patient.

    Background:

    • A 2.5-year-old boy with a history of retroperitoneal neuroblastoma (resection and irradiation at 9 months) presented with laryngeal obstruction.
    • The patient had no prior symptoms related to the upper airway or esophagus.

    Observation:

    • Multiple asymptomatic esophageal papillomas were identified in the upper two-thirds of the esophagus via barium swallow and esophagoscopy.
    • Pedunculated hypopharyngeal papillomas were also observed, presenting as the cause of laryngeal obstruction.

    Findings:

    • Biopsy confirmed that both the hypopharyngeal and esophageal lesions were histologically similar.
    • The papillomas were determined to be benign, despite the severe airway compromise.

    Implications:

    • This case underscores the importance of considering benign upper aerodigestive tract tumors in the differential diagnosis of pediatric laryngeal obstruction, especially in patients with a history of childhood cancer.
    • Further investigation into potential associations between prior oncological treatment and the development of esophageal and hypopharyngeal papillomas may be warranted.
