Right tracheal bronchus is an uncommon airway anomaly, often benign. Radiologists can detect it on CT scans, but it can rarely be associated with lung cancer, as seen in one case.

Area of Science:

  • Anatomical variations
  • Pulmonology
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Tracheal bronchus is a rare congenital anomaly of the airway.
  • It involves an aberrant origin of a bronchus from the trachea.
  • This anomaly is more common on the right side than the left.

Observation:

  • Three cases of tracheal bronchus were identified.
  • The anomaly presents variations, including with or without true ectopy.
  • Computed tomography (CT) is effective for radiologic identification.

Findings:

  • Right tracheal bronchus is typically a non-pathogenic finding.
  • In contrast, left-sided anomalies may have different clinical significance.
  • One case demonstrated lung cancer in the lung segment supplied by the anomalous right bronchus.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Awareness of tracheal bronchus is important for radiologists.
  • While often incidental, its potential association with pathology like lung cancer should be considered.
  • Accurate identification aids in surgical planning and diagnosis.
