Hydroxyurea therapy for sickle cell disease (SCD) reduces vaso-occlusion by decreasing adhesion receptors very late activation antigen-4 (VLA-4) and CD36 on sickle red blood cells. This receptor modulation occurs independently of reticulocyte count changes.
