Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Sports Medicine
  • Internal Medicine

Background:

  • Leg cramps are common, often benign, and self-limiting conditions.
  • Idiopathic nocturnal leg cramp represents the most prevalent form.
  • Rarely, leg cramps can indicate underlying systemic disorders.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To summarize the clinical presentation and management of leg cramps.
  • To differentiate between benign and potentially significant causes of leg cramps.
  • To outline appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.

Main Methods:

  • Review of clinical literature on leg cramps.
  • Analysis of diagnostic criteria for leg cramps.
  • Evaluation of symptomatic treatment options for leg cramps.

Main Results:

  • The majority of leg cramps are benign and do not necessitate extensive investigation.
  • Idiopathic nocturnal leg cramps are the most common presentation.
  • Calf muscle stretching via forceful foot dorsiflexion is an effective symptomatic treatment.

Conclusions:

  • Most leg cramps are benign and self-limiting, not requiring medical investigation.
  • Idiopathic nocturnal leg cramps are the most frequent type.
  • Symptomatic relief can be achieved through calf muscle stretching.
