Summary

Perfectionism in college students is linked to behavioral rigidity. Specifically, lower attitudinal flexibility and higher motor-cognitive rigidity predict self-oriented perfectionism, while flexibility predicts socially-prescribed perfectionism.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Cognitive Science

Background:

  • Perfectionism is a personality trait characterized by high standards and self-criticism.
  • Behavioral rigidity encompasses inflexibility in thought and action.
  • Understanding the relationship between these constructs is crucial for mental health research.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the associations between multidimensional perfectionism and cognitive-behavioral rigidity in adult college students.
  • To identify specific dimensions of behavioral rigidity that predict different facets of perfectionism.

Main Methods:

  • 108 adult college students completed multidimensional measures of perfectionism (self-oriented, other-oriented, socially-prescribed).
  • Behavioral rigidity was assessed using measures of attitudinal flexibility, psychomotor speed, and motor-cognitive rigidity.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Multiple regression analyses were employed to determine predictive relationships.
  • Main Results:

    • Attitudinal flexibility was negatively correlated with all three forms of perfectionism.
    • Motor-cognitive rigidity was positively correlated with self-oriented perfectionism.
    • Attitude flexibility and motor-cognitive rigidity significantly predicted self-oriented perfectionism; attitude flexibility predicted socially-prescribed perfectionism.

    Conclusions:

    • Different dimensions of perfectionism are associated with distinct aspects of cognitive-behavioral rigidity.
    • Attitudinal flexibility and motor-cognitive rigidity are key predictors for specific perfectionism facets.
    • These findings highlight the nuanced interplay between perfectionism and behavioral inflexibility.
