Insights
A rare case of obstructive jaundice in an infant was diagnosed using advanced imaging. Ultrasound and CT scans accurately identified a choledochal cyst before surgery.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Surgery
- Medical Imaging
Background:
- Obstructive jaundice in infants can stem from various congenital anomalies.
- Choledochal cysts are rare biliary tract malformations requiring early diagnosis.
Observation:
- A four-month-old female infant presented with symptoms of obstructive jaundice.
- Clinical history and non-invasive imaging were utilized for diagnostic evaluation.
Findings:
- Ultrasound and computerized tomography (CT) scans provided a precise pre-operative diagnosis.
- The cause of obstructive jaundice was identified as a choledochal cyst.
Implications:
- Accurate pre-operative diagnosis using imaging is crucial for effective surgical planning in pediatric obstructive jaundice.
- This case highlights the importance of advanced imaging in diagnosing rare congenital conditions like choledochal cysts in infants.
Abstract:
An unusual case of a four month old baby girl with obstructive jaundice due to a choledochal cyst is reported. Pertinent clinical history, ultrasound and computerized tomography allowed accurate pre-operative diagnosis.
