Area of Science:

  • Neonatal Medicine
  • Pediatric Surgery
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Spontaneous pneumoperitoneum, characterized by free air in the abdominal cavity without signs of peritonitis, is an uncommon condition in neonates.
  • While often associated with necrotizing enterocolitis, other causes require careful consideration and diagnostic evaluation.

Observation:

  • A male newborn presented with spontaneous pneumoperitoneum without evidence of peritonitis.
  • Multiple radiological examinations were performed to assess the extent of the condition.
  • The clinical presentation and diagnostic imaging guided the management strategy.

Findings:

  • The neonate's condition was managed conservatively, avoiding surgical intervention.
  • The patient demonstrated an excellent clinical evolution and recovery.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Radiological findings were consistent with free air but without signs of bowel perforation or generalized inflammation.
  • Implications:

    • Conservative management appears to be a safe and effective approach for select cases of neonatal spontaneous pneumoperitoneum without peritonitis.
    • This case highlights the importance of thorough radiological assessment to differentiate from surgical emergencies.
    • Further studies could explore criteria for conservative management in this specific neonatal population.
