[The role of metabolic control in diabetes mellitus]

Diabetic nephropathy and microangiopathy as the complications of type 1 diabetes mellitus play a major role in determining the increased mortality. Intensified insulin therapy and adequate teaching and treatment programs are the most important steps to prevent the occurrence and progression of diabetic complications. Near-normalisation of metabolic control results in life expectancy which is comparable to the reference population.
