Background:

  • Multiple sclerosis (MS) often involves cognitive impairment, resembling subcortical dementia and frontal lobe syndromes.
  • The Bicycle Drawing Test assesses visuographic skills, mechanical reasoning, and frontal lobe-mediated organizational abilities.

Observation:

  • Three MS patients with cognitive impairment showed deficits in detail recall and organization on the Bicycle Drawing Test.
  • These patients received extracerebral pulsed picotesla flux intensity electromagnetic field (EMF) treatments.

Findings:

  • All patients demonstrated progressive improvement in Bicycle Drawing Test performance over 6-18 months of EMF treatment.
  • Striking improvements were noted in organizational skills, indicative of enhanced frontal lobe function.

Implications:

  • Continuous picotesla EMF therapy may promote progressive cognitive recovery in MS patients.
  • Beneficial effects are hypothesized to stem from increased synaptic neurotransmission and slow recovery of frontal lobe monoaminergic neuron function.
