Type 1 diabetes affects hearing by causing early cochlear receptor dysfunction, prolonging auditory nerve activation. However, central auditory pathways remain unaffected in individuals with diabetes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess auditory pathway function from the cochlea to the auditory cortex in patients with IDDM.
  • To correlate auditory evoked responses and otoacoustic emissions with peripheral neuropathy in diabetes.

Main Methods:

  • Auditory evoked responses (ABRs, MLRs, LLRs) and evoked otoacoustic emissions (EOAEs) were measured in 48 IDDM patients and controls.
  • Peripheral neuropathy was diagnosed using nerve conduction velocity (NCV).
