Summary

Microsatellite instability is rare in colon adenomas, unlike in colon cancers. This suggests that microsatellite instability is not an early event in the development of most colorectal cancers.

  • Nearly all adenomas (98%) showed instability with less than 30% of primer sets.
  • No significant difference in MSI prevalence was observed between right-sided and left-sided adenomas, except for one case.
  • Conclusions:

    • Colonic adenomas display significantly lower levels of microsatellite instability (MSI) compared to colon carcinomas.
    • The right-sided predominance of MSI seen in colon cancers is not present in adenomas.
    • Microsatellite instability is generally not an early event in the progression of colonic neoplasia.
