Nondeficit schizophrenia patients show right visual field disadvantage in covert visuospatial attention, indicating slower processing. Deficit schizophrenia patients, however, do not exhibit this visual attentional asymmetry.

  • To investigate visual attentional asymmetries in schizophrenia using a deficit/nondeficit subgroup categorization.
  • To clarify the presence of visual attentional asymmetries in schizophrenia based on deficit status.

Main Methods:

  • Examined covert visuospatial attention task performance in clinically stable outpatients with schizophrenia (deficit and nondeficit subgroups) and normal subjects.
  • Administered peripheral and central cue versions of the task at 100-, 200-, and 800-msec intervals.

Conclusions:

  • Findings suggest slower visual information processing in the left cerebral hemisphere relative to the right in nondeficit schizophrenia.
  • This asymmetry is not explained by demographic factors, illness chronicity, medication, or generalized cognitive impairment.
