Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Pediatric Neurosurgery
  • Skeletal Pathology

Background:

  • Simple bone cysts (SBCs) are rare in the pediatric spine.
  • Cervical spine cysts can present with neck pain and neurological deficits.

Observation:

  • A 12-year-old female presented with posterior neck pain and a large cyst in the second cervical vertebra (C2).

Findings:

  • Complete surgical curettage of the C2 cyst was performed without bone grafting.
  • Histopathological examination confirmed the cyst as a simple bone cyst.
  • The surgical outcome was favorable with complete cyst removal.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the possibility of simple bone cysts occurring in the cervical spine, even in pediatric patients.
  • Surgical curettage is an effective treatment for spinal simple bone cysts.
  • Further research is needed to understand the etiology and optimal management of spinal SBCs.
