Summary

Anasarca, a severe swelling condition, was observed in two Awassi sheep foetuses. This condition can occur with or without extramedullary haematopoiesis, impacting foetal development.

Factors affecting the reproductive performance of Awassi sheep flocks in north-east of Jordan: an epidemiological study.

Tropical animal health and production·2009

Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Pathology
  • Reproductive Biology in Sheep

Background:

  • Dystocia in Awassi sheep, often caused by cervical dilation failure, necessitates intervention.
  • Foetal anasarca presents a significant challenge in ovine obstetrics.

Observation:

  • Two anasarcous Awassi sheep foetuses were delivered via caesarean section due to dystocia.
  • Foetuses exhibited significant weight differences (7kg and 13kg), deformed heads, and cystic ears.
  • Abnormal placental thickness and large volumes of uterine fluids were noted.

Findings:

  • Necropsy revealed generalized edema, subcutaneous tissue abnormalities, and serosanguinous effusions in body cavities.
  • Histopathology showed extramedullary haematopoiesis (EMH) in the liver of the larger foetus only.
  • Basophilic nucleated red blood cells and megakaryocytes were identified in the larger foetus's liver.

Implications:

  • This study confirms anasarca as a potential condition in Awassi sheep.
  • The findings highlight the variable presence of extramedullary haematopoiesis in ovine foetal anasarca.
  • Understanding these pathological findings aids in diagnosing and managing reproductive anomalies in sheep.
