Abstract:
Reutilization of endogenous nitrogen makes it possible to manage many chronic uremics for long periods on diets low in protein without dialysis or transplantation, provided that the protein is of high biologic value and is accompanied by enough calories from nonprotein sources to meet energy needs. But while dietary management of uremia is now feasible, its efficacy is limited by gaps in knowledge about nitrogen metabolism.
