Summary

Interferon alpha (IFN-alpha) therapy for chronic myelogenous leukemia can lead to manic symptoms, especially under stress. This suggests a broader definition of persistent IFN-alpha side effects is needed.

Background:

  • Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) is a myeloproliferative neoplasm.
  • Interferon alpha (IFN-alpha) is a cytokine used in CML treatment.
  • Psychiatric adverse effects of IFN-alpha are known but typically emerge earlier in treatment.

Observation:

  • Two patients on long-term IFN-alpha therapy for CML developed manic symptoms.
  • The onset of manic symptoms occurred significantly after therapy initiation.
  • These episodes were noted during periods of psychosocial stress.

Findings:

  • Chronic IFN-alpha treatment may increase vulnerability to psychiatric symptoms.
  • Manic episodes can be a late-onset adverse effect of IFN-alpha therapy.
