Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effect of prebiotics, lactulose and lactitol, on bile acid metabolism in the human colon.
  • To assess the potential of prebiotics in mitigating risks associated with colorectal cancer.

Main Methods:

  • A continuous culture model of the human colon was used to study the fermentation of lactulose by intestinal bacteria.
  • The impact of lactitol on bile acid dehydroxylation was examined in miniature pig rectosigmoid colon and human feces.

Main Results:

  • Lactulose significantly reduced the dehydroxylation of chenodeoxycholic acid to lithocholic acid by over 90%.
  • Lactitol had minimal effect on primary bile acid dehydroxylation in pigs but decreased steroid and bile acid concentrations in human feces.

Conclusions:

  • Secondary bile acid metabolites may play a role in colorectal carcinogenesis.
  • Dietary supplementation with prebiotics could offer a beneficial strategy for high-risk populations.
