Gastric emptying of solids in hyperthyroid patients is normal before and during treatment. After treatment normalizes thyroid levels (euthyroidism), gastric emptying speeds up slightly compared to healthy individuals.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Endocrinology
- Nuclear Medicine
Background:
- Hyperthyroidism can affect gastrointestinal motility.
- Understanding gastric emptying is crucial for managing hyperthyroid patients.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate solid meal gastric emptying in hyperthyroid women.
- To assess changes in gastric emptying during thiamazole treatment and after achieving euthyroidism.
Main Methods:
- Prospective study of 11 hyperthyroid women and 12 healthy controls.
- Scintigraphic measurement of 99mTc-labeled solid meal emptying over 90 minutes.
- Analysis using a power-exponential model to determine gastric half-emptying time (t1/2), curve shape (S), and slope (K).
Main Results:
- Pretreatment gastric emptying in hyperthyroid patients was similar to controls.
- Gastric emptying remained unchanged during the third week of thiamazole treatment.
- A significant increase in gastric emptying rate (t1/2 and K) was observed after euthyroidism was restored.
Conclusions:
- Solid meal gastric emptying is not significantly different in hyperthyroid women compared to healthy controls.
- Pharmacological treatment with thiamazole does not alter gastric emptying rates.
- Euthyroidism is associated with a slight but significant increase in gastric emptying rate in previously hyperthyroid women.

Radionuclide Testing
Radionuclide testing is a sophisticated medical technique for assessing gastrointestinal motility. It focuses on gastric emptying and colonic transit time. Radioactive markers track the movement of food through the digestive system, providing insights into gastrointestinal disorders.
