Summary

Postinflammatory medial canal stenosis, a rare condition from chronic ear infections, often requires surgery. Surgical treatment improved hearing in patients with this stenosis.

Background:

Postinflammatory medial canal stenosis is a rare condition.
It results from chronic external otitis.

Purpose of the Study:

To describe the diagnosis and treatment of postinflammatory medial canal stenosis.
To review a large series of cases.

Main Methods:

Retrospective chart review.
Study conducted at a tertiary otologic referral center.
Included 24 patients with postinflammatory medial canal stenosis.

Main Results:

Surgical therapy was performed in 14 ears (11 patients).
Mean pure-tone average hearing threshold improved from 37 dB to 26 dB postoperatively.
Air-bone gap improved from 24 dB to 15 dB.
Three recurrences were noted in the surgery group.

Conclusions:

Postinflammatory medial canal stenosis requires surgical intervention.
Surgery can correct the conductive hearing loss associated with this condition.
