    Summary

    This study found electroencephalography (EEG) patterns during cognitive tasks were linked to stimulus features and physical movements, not distinct cognitive processes. No evidence for lateralized brain activity in cognitive tasks was observed.

    Background:

    • Distinguishing electroencephalography (EEG) correlates of cognitive processes from other neural activity is challenging.
    • Previous research often fails to control for non-cognitive factors influencing EEG.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To differentiate EEG patterns associated with cognitive task components from those related to stimulus characteristics, motor activity, and performance factors.
    • To investigate the potential for EEG to reveal lateralization of cognitive functions.

    Main Methods:

    • Thirty-two adults performed four controlled tasks: mental rotation, serial addition, letter substitution, and visual fixation.
    • EEG data was analyzed for differences across tasks, controlling for physical and performance variables.

    • All complex tasks showed generalized reductions in alpha and beta band intensities and increases in theta band intensities compared to visual fixation.

    • EEG patterns differentiating complex tasks were attributed to stimulus characteristics, efferent activities, and performance factors, not cognitive differences.
    • The study did not find evidence supporting the lateralization of different cognitive activities in the EEG.
