Background:

  • Mucous cysts are common benign cystic lesions.
  • Surgical excision is a primary treatment for symptomatic mucous cysts.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the outcomes and complications of surgical mucous cyst excision.
  • To inform patients about potential risks associated with the procedure.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 86 mucous cyst excisions in 79 patients.
  • Follow-up averaged 2.6 years post-surgery.

Main Results:

  • 17% of digits had residual extension loss (5-20 degrees) at IP or DIP joints.
  • 3% recurrence rate; 7% developed new nail deformities postoperatively.
  • Complications included infection, DIP arthrodesis, swelling, pain, numbness, stiffness, and joint deviation.

Conclusions:

  • Surgical excision of mucous cysts has a low recurrence rate but carries risks.
  • Potential complications include decreased range of motion, persistent swelling, pain, infection, and nail deformities.
  • Preoperative patient counseling regarding potential risks is recommended.
