    Background:

    • Thyroid cancer diagnosis and management require reliable biomarkers.
    • Plasma carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is a known tumor marker, but its role in thyroid cancer is not fully established.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the diagnostic utility of plasma CEA levels in patients with thyroid conditions.
    • To determine the correlation between plasma CEA levels and different types of thyroid cancer.

    Main Methods:

    • Plasma CEA levels were quantified using the Z-Gel technique.
    • The study included 138 patients with benign thyroid diseases, 25 with thyroid cancer, and 141 healthy controls.

    Main Results:

    • Elevated CEA levels (>5 ng/ml) were observed in 20% of thyroid cancer patients, compared to 2% of normal subjects and none with benign thyroid conditions.
    • Significantly higher CEA levels were noted in all medullary thyroid carcinoma cases.
    • Elevated CEA was also detected in other histological subtypes of thyroid cancer.

    Conclusions:

    • Plasma CEA measurement shows potential as a valuable tool for the preoperative diagnosis of thyroid cancer.
    • CEA levels may also be useful in the post-treatment follow-up of thyroid cancer patients.
    • Further research into CEA's role across diverse thyroid cancer subtypes is warranted.
