Summary

Partial fundoplication effectively treats gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in patients with weak esophageal peristalsis. This laparoscopic procedure resolves reflux symptoms without causing dysphagia or gas bloat syndrome.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Surgical Innovation

Background:

  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) affects 20% of patients with impaired esophageal peristalsis.
  • Total fundoplication can cause dysphagia and gas bloat syndrome in these patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of partial fundoplication in GERD patients with severely impaired esophageal peristalsis.

Main Methods:

  • Laparoscopic partial fundoplication (240-270 degrees) was performed on 26 GERD patients with abnormal esophageal peristalsis.
  • Mean DeMeester score was 92 +/- 16.

Main Results:

  • All patients experienced symptom resolution or improvement.
  • No patients developed postoperative dysphagia or gas bloat syndrome.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Postoperative pH monitoring confirmed complete or near-complete resolution of abnormal reflux.
  • Conclusions:

    • Partial fundoplication is an effective treatment for GERD patients with weak peristalsis.
    • It successfully corrects reflux while avoiding common postoperative complications like dysphagia.
