Pancreato-duodenectomy, or Whipple procedure, can be a life-saving operation for severe abdominal trauma. This case report details a successful Whipple procedure for a stab wound, despite a minor pancreatic fistula.

Area of Science:

  • Surgery
  • Trauma Surgery
  • Gastrointestinal Surgery

Background:

  • Pancreato-duodenectomy (Whipple procedure) is a complex surgery typically reserved for malignant neoplasms.
  • Severe abdominal trauma can present complex reconstructive challenges.

Observation:

  • A patient presented with a stab wound to the stomach and duodenum requiring surgical intervention.
  • Primary reconstruction of the duodenal and gastric injury was not feasible.

Findings:

  • A Whipple procedure was successfully performed for trauma reconstruction.
  • The pancreatic stump was stapled, resulting in an uneventful recovery with a low-output pancreatic fistula.

Implications:

  • The Whipple procedure may be a viable option for select cases of severe abdominal trauma when reconstruction is not possible.
